Suggestions for Welcoming the Stranger
1. Pray for openness of heart with those who have the power to bring about change in laws.
2. Use Scripture to deepen your capacity to “welcome the stranger.”
3. Gather and share accurate and current information on immigration.
4. Reach out to vulnerable groups in your Church and neighborhood.
5. Participate in cultural awareness activities that promote understanding.
6. Involve yourself in advocacy activities on behalf of immigrants on all levels: local, regional, national.
7. Study to understand the 5 principles that guide Catholic Social teaching on immigration as expressed in the document: Welcoming the Stranger.
Ø Persons have the right to find opportunities in their homeland. (#34)
Ø Persons have the right to migrate to support themselves and their families. (#35)
Ø Sovereign nations have the right to control their borders. (#36)
Ø Refugees and asylum seekers should be afforded protection. (#37)
Ø The human dignity and human rights of undocumented immigrants should be respected. (#38)
8. Make sure the interior of your parish Church shows an awareness of and is welcoming to immigrants.
9. Be aware of services available to immigrants and help them to access those services.
